Kuwait Detains Three Over Viral Video Mocking National Situation Amid Social Media Crackdown

Kuwaiti law enforcement officials have taken decisive action by detaining three individuals linked to a viral video that allegedly ridiculed the current state of affairs in the country. The video, which quickly gained traction on various social media platforms, prompted a swift response from the Interior Ministry, emphasizing the government’s intolerance towards content perceived as harmful to national interests.

The Interior Ministry revealed that the detainees include two Kuwaiti citizens and one Colombian national. The arrests came after authorities identified the video during a routine and ongoing surveillance operation aimed at monitoring digital content circulating online. This proactive approach reflects Kuwait’s heightened vigilance in regulating social media activities amid sensitive political and social circumstances.

Those apprehended are facing multiple charges, including the dissemination of false information, actions detrimental to the country’s welfare, and the improper use of telecommunications devices. The ministry confirmed that the suspects remain in custody as legal proceedings are underway, with the case set to be forwarded to the appropriate judicial bodies for further action. This move underscores the seriousness with which Kuwait treats violations related to digital conduct and national security.

Officials have reiterated that such behaviour—mocking or undermining the nation through social media—is unacceptable and runs counter to the laws governing online expression. The Interior Ministry has issued a stern reminder to the public about the importance of adhering to regulations designed to maintain social harmony and protect the state’s reputation, especially during times of heightened regional tension and internal challenges.

In addition to the arrests, the Ministry has appealed to both citizens and expatriates residing in Kuwait to exercise caution and responsibility when posting or sharing content online. They warned that spreading unverified information or inflammatory material could not only incite public unrest but also threaten the stability of the country’s digital environment. The government’s firm stance serves as a clear warning that violations of cyber laws will be met with strict penalties.

Complementing these efforts, Kuwait’s Cybersecurity Centre issued a statement cautioning against the circulation of unconfirmed claims related to cyberattacks. The Centre highlighted that engaging with such content could unnecessarily alarm the public and disrupt the digital infrastructure. This advisory aligns with the broader governmental strategy to safeguard national security and maintain public confidence in the digital space.
