Police in Islamabad said on Saturday that Laiba, a student at the International Islamic University, allegedly took her own life after learning that admission papers for a US university, arranged through an agent, were forged. Police said she had become distressed after finding the agent’s paperwork was fraudulent.
Her body was reportedly found hanging by a roadside in the G-10 sector, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Ramna police station.
Family details payments made for US admission
The family said Laiba had earned a BS degree with a gold medal and hoped to continue her studies abroad. They claimed an immigration consultant had asked for Rs7 million to secure a place at a US university.
Her father, who rents a flat and sells milk from a motorcycle, reportedly sold his plot and handed over Rs2.1 million in cash to the agent. Her mother’s jewellery was also placed with a bank to raise the outstanding sum, relatives added.
Police widen inquiry as post-mortem report awaited
According to the family, Laiba found every admission document to be counterfeit when she had them checked. In a last message to her maternal uncle, she urged him not to tell her father about the deception, warning, “He will die.”
Police said they have broadened their investigation and are looking into the case from several angles. Officers added that the post-mortem report had not yet been received, and the actual cause of death would be confirmed once it arrives.
