An Islamabad sessions court on Tuesday handed down a death sentence to a Chinese national for the murder of his compatriot in the capital city in 2024.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Afzal Majoka delivered the verdict in the case involving the killing of Chinese national Xue Xinliang, who was fatally shot in Islamabad’s Sector G-13/3 in August 2024.
The court sentenced Yan Guoxuan to death under the relevant sections of the Pakistan Penal Code and ordered him to pay Rs1 million in compensation to the victim’s family. It was further ruled that if Yan fails to pay the compensation, he will serve an additional six months in prison.
In addition to the death sentence, Yan was sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs100,000 for house trespassing. However, he was acquitted of charges under Section 354 of the Pakistan Penal Code, which pertains to assault or criminal force against a woman with intent to outrage her modesty.
The murder case was registered at Sumbal Police Station in Islamabad earlier this year. Authorities arrested Yan shortly after the incident and initiated an investigation into the shooting.
Police revealed that Safe City surveillance systems alerted them to gunfire at a flat occupied by Chinese nationals. Initial investigations indicated that the shooting stemmed from a dispute between Yan and Xue.
An eyewitness named Yao Di, who lived with Xue in the upper portion of the flat, reported hearing breaking glass and gunshots. Upon going downstairs, she saw Yan, residing in the lower portion, holding a firearm. She stated that Yan fired at Xue, who collapsed on the stairs. Yao Di then transported Xue to the hospital in a private vehicle.
Xue had suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was in critical condition when police apprehended Yan. The court’s ruling concludes the trial with the death sentence for Yan, pending the standard legal procedures and any appeals.
