US Affirms Pakistan’s Right to Self-Defense Amid Rising Afghan Taliban Clashes

In a significant development concerning regional security, the United States has reiterated its support for Pakistan’s sovereign right to defend itself against attacks by the Afghan Taliban. Allison M. Hooker, the US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, emphasized Washington’s close monitoring of the escalating tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Her statement came amid recent cross-border clashes that have resulted in casualties and heightened military activity along the volatile frontier.

Hooker conveyed her condolences over the loss of lives during these confrontations in a conversation with Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary. She underscored the United States’ commitment to standing by Pakistan as it responds to Taliban aggression. In a message posted on the social media platform X, she affirmed that the US continues to observe developments carefully while supporting Pakistan’s efforts to protect its borders from militant incursions.

Further reinforcing this stance, a spokesperson for the US State Department issued a formal statement highlighting Pakistan’s legitimate right to defend itself against attacks originating from the Taliban, which the US designates as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist organization. The statement criticized the Taliban for repeatedly failing to honor their counterterrorism obligations, pointing out that Afghanistan remains a base from which various terrorist groups launch violent operations. This ongoing challenge complicates regional stability and security efforts.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump also commented on the intensifying military situation between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban regime. Speaking to reporters before departing for Texas, Trump expressed confidence in Pakistan’s handling of the conflict, describing Islamabad’s response as “terrifically well.” When asked about the possibility of US intervention, he clarified that although he would consider stepping in, his strong rapport with Pakistan’s leadership influenced his decision to refrain from direct involvement.

Trump went on to commend Pakistan’s top leadership, specifically mentioning Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief General Asim Munir. He praised their leadership qualities and expressed high regard for their roles in managing the crisis. His remarks highlighted a positive diplomatic relationship between the US and Pakistan, emphasizing mutual respect and cooperation amid challenging circumstances.

On the ground, Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Attaullah Tarar, provided detailed updates on the ongoing military operation named Ghazab lil-Haq (Righteous Fury). Launched in response to unprovoked cross-border attacks by the Afghan Taliban, the operation has reportedly inflicted heavy losses on the militants. Tarar, Pakistani security forces have killed 331 Taliban fighters and wounded over 500 others. Additionally, 104 militant posts have been destroyed, and 22 militants captured during the campaign.

Tarar further revealed that the operation has targeted 37 locations across Afghanistan through coordinated air strikes, destroying 163 tanks and armored vehicles. The offensive, which began on Friday night, involves synchronized air and ground assaults aimed at Taliban strongholds along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border as well as key military installations within Afghanistan. This robust military response underscores Pakistan’s determination to secure its borders and dismantle militant infrastructure threatening its sovereignty.

These developments come at a time when regional security dynamics remain fragile, with the Afghan Taliban’s resurgence posing ongoing challenges. Pakistan’s assertive military actions and the US’s vocal support signal a complex interplay of diplomacy and defense strategies aimed at stabilizing the region. Observers will be watching closely to see how these efforts evolve and impact the broader geopolitical landscape in South Asia.
