Taliban Seeks Dialogue After Pakistan’s Strong Military Response to Border Clashes

The Taliban regime in Afghanistan expressed a desire to resolve ongoing tensions with Pakistan through dialogue after a series of deadly confrontations along the border. On Friday, Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid reiterated their call for a peaceful resolution, emphasizing that despite recent hostilities, they remain committed to settling disputes through negotiation rather than continued violence.

This announcement came in the wake of a fierce military response by Pakistan following unprovoked attacks by Afghan Taliban fighters. On Thursday night, militants launched aggressive firing across several sectors in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), targeting areas including Chitral, Khyber, Mohmand, Kurram, and Bajaur. Pakistan’s armed forces swiftly retaliated, engaging in operations that significantly degraded Taliban positions along the border.

Pakistan’s military response was both comprehensive and precise. The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) conducted targeted strikes deep inside Afghanistan, hitting strategic locations in Kandahar, Kabul, and Paktia provinces. The Director-General of the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) detailed the operation’s outcomes, reporting that approximately 274 Taliban fighters and members of affiliated terror groups were killed, with over 400 others wounded during the counterattacks. Furthermore, Pakistani forces destroyed more than 74 Taliban posts and seized control of 18 checkposts that had been used by militants.

In addition to ground operations, the ISPR highlighted the destruction of 115 enemy tanks and armored vehicles, underscoring the scale and intensity of the military engagement. The operation also targeted 22 hideouts belonging to extremist groups Fitna al-Hindustan and Fitna al-Khawarij, which have been involved in destabilizing activities in the region. Many militants reportedly fled the combat zones, abandoning the bodies of their fallen comrades in the face of Pakistan’s decisive retaliation.

The military offensive extended beyond the immediate border areas, with strikes carried out against Taliban military installations in Nangarhar, Laghman, and Paktika provinces. The ISPR DG specifically mentioned the destruction of an infantry brigade headquarters in Kabul, as well as a similar facility in Kandahar. The dramatic nighttime airstrikes over Kabul were visible internationally, symbolizing Pakistan’s resolve to respond robustly to cross-border aggression.

Despite the success of the operation, Pakistan also suffered casualties. Twelve security personnel lost their lives, and 27 others were injured during the intense clashes. The ISPR emphasized that the retaliatory measures were conducted under the direct orders of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who has instructed the military to maintain a firm stance against any threats to Pakistan’s sovereignty. The operation was described as a defensive necessity aimed at protecting the country and its citizens, with Pakistani forces exercising professionalism by strictly targeting military objectives.

Additionally, Pakistani forces successfully thwarted drone attacks in Abbottabad and Nowshera districts of KP amid the ongoing exchange of fire. These drone incursions were linked to the Taliban regime, further complicating the security situation along the border.

Earlier on Friday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif visited the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi to receive a comprehensive briefing from senior military officials regarding the border clashes. During his address, the prime minister underscored the importance of a zero-tolerance policy toward the alliance between the Afghan Taliban and extremist groups such as Fitna al-Khawarij. He condemned the cross-border attacks as unacceptable provocations and reaffirmed Pakistan’s sovereign right to defend its territory against any form of aggression.

This latest episode of violence highlights the fragile security dynamics between Pakistan and Afghanistan, where militant groups continue to exploit porous borders to launch attacks. The Taliban’s call for dialogue, juxtaposed with Pakistan’s forceful military response, reflects the complex interplay of diplomacy and defense in the region. As tensions simmer, the international community watches closely, hoping for a de-escalation that can pave the way for lasting peace and stability along this volatile frontier.
