Foreign-Based Gangsters Run Extortion Network in Karachi: AIG Reveals

Additional Inspector General of Karachi Police, Azad Khan, disclosed on Monday that gangsters operating from abroad have established an extortion network within Karachi, the country’s economic hub. During his visit to the SITE Association of Industry office, he reassured industrialists that the police are addressing extortion-related concerns with utmost seriousness.

The city has recently experienced a surge in extortion cases, particularly targeting builders and traders through international phone calls and attacks on their business premises. This escalation has caused alarm among the business community. Azad Khan confirmed that these incidents have intensified over the past two weeks.

In a significant development, Interpol Red Notices have been issued against five foreign-based gangsters, resulting in a reduction of their activities. The Karachi police chief stated that the authorities have shared the phone numbers and other relevant information of these extortionists with the respective countries to facilitate further action.

He also highlighted a recent successful crackdown on the ‘Samad Kathiawari’ group, emphasizing that extortionists are terrorizing citizens and that no leniency will be shown. Azad Khan underscored the sacrifices made by law enforcement to restore peace in Karachi and pledged to maintain stability in the city at all costs.

Expressing his personal commitment, he said he is closely monitoring the situation. The police chief stressed the importance of Karachi’s economic security, warning that a weakened economy could lead to increased unemployment and crime. Reflecting on his roots, he mentioned, “I grew up in this city, and this city owes us a debt.”

Seeking cooperation from industrialists, he acknowledged the challenges faced by Sindh police, including budget constraints, noting that his department would not be able to purchase a new vehicle this year. He appealed for public support, stating, “When people see us working hard, they also help us.”

Azad Khan reported a 25% decline in vehicle and motorcycle snatching incidents, along with a decrease in murders during robberies. He affirmed that while their efforts have produced positive results, they aim to enhance their services further. “We are doing our best to continue providing good services,” he concluded.
