Taliban Leader Hibatullah Akhundzada’s Fate Unclear After Pakistani Airstrikes in Kabul

Islamabad witnessed a surge of speculation on February 27, 2026, after unverified social media posts claimed that Hibatullah Akhundzada, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, might have been killed during recent Pakistani airstrikes targeting Taliban strongholds in Kabul. The initial reports emerged on the social media platform X, where an account named “Afghan Times” shared the news, sparking widespread discussion and concern across the region.

Alongside the claims about Akhundzada, the same online post suggested that several high-ranking Taliban commanders also lost their lives in the airstrike. However, these assertions remain unconfirmed as neither Afghan government officials nor independent observers have provided any official statements or evidence to substantiate the reports. The lack of credible confirmation has led experts and analysts to urge caution in accepting these claims at face value.

This development comes amid a backdrop of escalating tensions along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, where security forces have been on heightened alert. Pakistani authorities reported that Taliban militants initiated unprovoked attacks by firing across the border, which prompted a swift and forceful response from Pakistan’s military. In retaliation, the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) conducted a series of precision airstrikes targeting multiple Taliban positions deep inside Afghanistan.

security sources, one of the most significant strikes hit a large ammunition depot located in Nangarhar province. The attack reportedly triggered massive explosions, severely damaging the Taliban’s logistical and supply networks in the region. Officials further claimed that these counter-offensive operations resulted in the deaths of at least 133 Taliban fighters, with over 200 others sustaining injuries across various sectors where the strikes were carried out.

Despite the circulating rumors regarding the demise of Akhundzada, no verified information has emerged to confirm his death. Security analysts and regional experts emphasize the importance of verifying such sensitive information through independent channels before drawing any conclusions. They warn that misinformation can exacerbate an already volatile situation and complicate diplomatic efforts in the region.

Pakistani officials have reiterated that the primary objective of the airstrikes was to dismantle militant infrastructure and disrupt the Taliban’s operational capabilities to prevent further cross-border attacks. The military continues to maintain vigilant surveillance over Taliban movements and remains prepared for any necessary follow-up actions to safeguard national security. As the situation remains fluid, authorities on both sides are closely monitoring developments to avoid further escalation.
