LAHORE: In response to the ongoing security challenges along Pakistan’s western frontier, the Punjab Police have escalated their alert status throughout the province as the second Friday of Ramadan approaches. This move comes amid concerns over potential threats during one of the holiest months in the Islamic calendar, prompting authorities to implement stringent security protocols aimed at preserving peace and public safety.
Inspector General of Punjab Police, Rao Abdul Kareem, has issued clear directives to all regional and district police commanders to exercise heightened vigilance in light of the prevailing internal security climate. The police spokesperson confirmed that extensive security arrangements have been activated, particularly in major urban centers and districts deemed sensitive due to their strategic or symbolic importance.
Under the IG’s guidance, officers have been instructed to maintain a sharp focus on monitoring suspicious activities, including those linked to terrorist networks and disruptive elements. Emphasizing the critical nature of these efforts during Ramadan, the IG underscored the police force’s commitment to standing united with Pakistan’s armed forces and other security agencies in safeguarding the nation’s stability.
As part of the enhanced security framework, additional personnel have been deployed at mosques and other religious venues where large congregations gather for Friday prayers. This includes bolstering police presence at checkpoints, key government offices, sensitive installations, and foreign diplomatic missions, notably those of China and other international partners, which remain high-priority sites for protection.
Specialized units such as the Dolphin Squad, Police Response Unit (PRU), and Elite Force have been mobilized to increase patrols around critical locations. These teams are actively engaged in search, sweep, and combing operations across the province, targeting extremist factions identified by authorities as Fitna-ul-Kharij and Fitna-ul-Hindustan, groups considered a significant threat to regional security.
Furthermore, the IG has called for seamless coordination between district administrations, Civil Defence, and Rescue 1122 services to ensure a rapid and organized response should any emergency arise. This collaborative approach aims to enhance the overall effectiveness of security measures and emergency preparedness during this sensitive period.
In a public reassurance, Rao Abdul Kareem conveyed confidence in the Punjab Police’s readiness to manage any situation that may develop, including maintaining law and order and providing assistance during crises. He urged the public to stay calm and refrain from spreading unverified information or rumors circulating on social media, which could undermine collective security efforts.
Authorities reiterated that the security posture across Punjab remains robust and proactive, with all necessary precautions being taken to protect citizens and maintain stability amid the ongoing national security challenges. The comprehensive measures reflect the government’s commitment to ensuring that religious observances proceed peacefully despite the tense environment along the country’s western border.
