Sindh Assembly Convenes Emergency Session to Bolster Security Measures Amid Rising Threats

The Sindh Assembly recently convened an urgent high-level meeting focused on addressing escalating security challenges across the province. This critical session was presided over by Sindh Interior Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar, who underscored the necessity of immediate and stringent measures to safeguard public safety. The gathering involved a comprehensive review of the current security landscape, with particular attention to vulnerable points such as airports, transportation hubs, and public spaces.

Minister Lanjar opened the discussion by reflecting on recent incidents that have raised serious concerns about the effectiveness of existing security protocols. He stressed the importance of adopting a proactive stance to prevent any untoward events that could jeopardize the safety of citizens. Recognizing the significant footfall at Karachi’s airport, which serves as a major gateway for both domestic and international travelers, Lanjar announced new restrictions to regulate the number of individuals allowed for pick-and-drop services. This move aims to reduce congestion and enhance the ability of security personnel to monitor and control access more effectively.

Given Karachi’s pivotal role as Pakistan’s economic powerhouse, the Interior Minister highlighted the urgent need for seamless cooperation among various law enforcement agencies operating within the city. He called for the development of a detailed Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to ensure rapid and coordinated responses to any security incidents. This SOP would serve as a blueprint for action, enabling authorities to act swiftly and decisively in crisis situations, thereby minimizing potential damage and disruption.

In addition to local coordination, Lanjar emphasized the importance of maintaining strong communication channels with security counterparts in other provinces. This inter-provincial collaboration is crucial in addressing cross-border threats and ensuring a unified approach to tackling security challenges. To further tighten security within correctional facilities, the minister directed that search devices be made available in all prisons throughout Sindh. These devices are to be utilized during surprise inspections, picketing, and combing operations to prevent the smuggling of contraband and maintain order.

Another significant directive from the meeting was the mandatory deployment of female search personnel at all major entry and exit points across the province. This measure is intended to respect cultural sensitivities while ensuring thorough security checks for all individuals. Furthermore, Lanjar ordered a rigorous crackdown on the public display of weapons, signaling zero tolerance for such activities that threaten public peace. He insisted on the full and faithful implementation of the National Action Plan, emphasizing that every clause must be enforced both in letter and spirit to restore law and order effectively.

Lastly, the Interior Minister addressed the enforcement of tenancy laws, underscoring their role in maintaining social stability. He also called for intensified surveillance at critical transportation nodes, including railway stations, bus terminals, truck stands, and cargo depots. These areas are often exploited for illicit activities, and heightened vigilance is necessary to close any security gaps. The comprehensive measures outlined in this emergency meeting reflect the Sindh government’s commitment to strengthening the province’s security framework amid growing threats.
