Growing Rift Between PTI Leadership and Imran Khan’s Family Over Jail Communications

RAWALPINDI: A significant and troubling divide has come to light within the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), exposing a widening gap between the party’s senior leadership and the family of its imprisoned founder, Imran Khan. This internal discord appears to be rooted in disagreements over communication channels and strategic decisions related to Imran Khan’s ongoing legal battles and incarceration. The unfolding situation reveals complexities that go beyond typical political differences, touching upon family dynamics and legal maneuvering.

The tension first became apparent following statements made by Aleema Khan, Imran Khan’s sister, who claimed that messages had been sent from the daughter of Bushra Bibi, the former prime minister’s wife. Aleema asserted that she was encouraged to speak out on behalf of the family, suggesting a united front. However, these claims were strongly refuted by PTI insiders, who denied any such communication had taken place between Bushra Bibi’s family and Aleema Khan. Instead, it has been conveyed that Imran Khan himself has instructed his relatives to reduce their visits to Adiala Jail, emphasizing that their efforts should be concentrated on legal proceedings rather than frequent prison appearances. This directive highlights the founder’s strategic focus on court battles over public or familial displays of support.

One of the most contentious issues fueling the internal strife concerns Imran Khan’s health and the access he receives to medical care while incarcerated. It has emerged that the PTI leader specifically requested that his meetings within the jail be prioritized for medical professionals, particularly Dr. Asim and Dr. Faisal, rather than family members. This request underscores the seriousness of his medical condition and the need for professional attention. However, complications arose when the party’s legal team sought to file a petition to facilitate these medical visits. Reports indicate that Aleema Khan intervened to halt the lawyers’ efforts to move forward with the court application, creating a significant rift within the party’s legal and political apparatus.

The dispute escalated when the matter was brought before the PTI parliamentary party. Chairman Barrister Gohar and Senator Ali Zafar instructed Latif Khosa to proceed with filing the petition, signaling a push from certain party leaders to prioritize Imran Khan’s medical needs through legal channels. This decision, however, faced opposition from Salman Akram Raja, further exposing divisions within the party’s legal team. Observers suggest that Aleema Khan’s recent public criticism of the party chairman and the legal team is directly linked to this conflict over the medical petition, reflecting deeper disagreements about how to manage Imran Khan’s situation.

The discord is not confined to political strategy but has spilled over into the personal realm of the family. Sources reveal that Aleema Khan has taken steps to limit visits from Bushra Bibi’s relatives to the former first lady in prison, indicating a growing estrangement within the family circle. This move points to a fracturing of relationships that complicates the already delicate situation surrounding Imran Khan’s incarceration and the party’s efforts to support him.

Meanwhile, despite the internal turmoil, prominent political figures such as Ayaz Sadiq and Mohsin Naqvi have maintained ongoing communication with PTI leadership, reflecting the broader political significance of the situation. Additionally, the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sohail Afridi, is reportedly working closely with relevant authorities to ensure that Imran Khan receives the necessary medical care during his imprisonment. These efforts highlight the intersection of political responsibility and humanitarian concern amid the party’s challenges.

As the legal battles surrounding Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi continue to unfold, the emergence of these internal conflicts within PTI presents a formidable obstacle. The party, already under intense external pressure from political opponents and the judiciary, now faces the added complication of managing disputes within its own ranks and family. How PTI navigates these internal divisions could have significant implications for its future cohesion and political strategy.
