Five KP Police Officers Killed in Separate Attacks Amid Rising Cross-Border Tensions

Tragedy struck Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Wednesday as five police personnel were killed in two distinct violent incidents, underscoring the persistent security threats in the region. Four members of the Ababeel Squad, a specialized patrolling unit tasked with maintaining law and order, were ambushed and fatally shot in Bajaur district. Meanwhile, another police officer was assassinated in Landi Kotal, further intensifying concerns about the safety of law enforcement officials operating near the volatile Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

The first attack occurred just minutes before iftar in the Nawe Kale area of Khar tehsil, Bajaur. The four officers—identified as Yaar Zada, Daud, Imran, and Siraj—were traveling on three motorcycles when assailants opened indiscriminate fire on them. Two other officers, Irshad and Aziz, sustained injuries during the assault. District Police Officer Muhammad Khalid explained that the Ababeel Squad routinely conducts patrols across various markets and sensitive locations in the district to curb criminal activities and maintain public safety. The sudden and brutal nature of the attack has shocked the local community and police force alike.

Following the shooting, law enforcement agencies swiftly launched a comprehensive search operation in Nawe Kale and its surrounding areas to track down the perpetrators. Authorities have vowed to continue these efforts relentlessly until those responsible are apprehended and brought to justice. The slain officers were honored in funeral prayers held at the Police Lines in Bajaur, where senior police officials and civil dignitaries gathered to pay their respects and commend the ultimate sacrifice made by these brave men in the line of duty.

In a separate but equally distressing incident, police constable Safeer Khan was shot outside his residence in the Sultan Khel area of Landi Kotal, located in the Khyber district. The attack also left his son injured. Both were immediately transported to the Hayatabad Medical Complex in Peshawar for urgent medical treatment. Despite the efforts of medical staff, Safeer Khan succumbed to his injuries, while his son remains hospitalized. This targeted killing highlights the increasing risks faced by police personnel in the region, where militant activity has surged in recent years.

The rise in such violent episodes is closely linked to the broader security dynamics following the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan in 2021. Since then, Pakistan’s border provinces, particularly Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, have witnessed a noticeable uptick in cross-border terrorist activities. These areas share porous and often difficult-to-monitor frontiers with Afghanistan, making them vulnerable to infiltration by various militant groups.

In response to escalating threats, Pakistan conducted intelligence-driven airstrikes last Saturday targeting seven terrorist camps and hideouts along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. These operations focused on dismantling networks affiliated with Fitna al Khawarij (FAK), Daesh-Khorasan, and other extremist factions. The strikes took place in Afghanistan’s Nangarhar, Paktika, and Khost provinces, reportedly eliminating more than 80 militants. This decisive action reflects Pakistan’s commitment to curbing terrorism despite the complex geopolitical challenges in the region.

It is important to recall that tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have flared repeatedly since the Taliban’s takeover. In October 2025, both countries engaged in intense border clashes after militants launched unprovoked attacks on Pakistani border posts. These confrontations resulted in the deaths of over 200 Taliban and allied militants, while 23 Pakistani soldiers lost their lives defending the nation’s frontiers. Despite numerous diplomatic efforts and rounds of talks, a lasting agreement remains elusive, primarily due to the Afghan Taliban regime’s reluctance to take decisive action against terrorist groups operating from its territory.

As the security situation continues to evolve, the recent attacks on police personnel in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa serve as a grim reminder of the ongoing threats faced by those on the frontlines. The sacrifices of officers like Yaar Zada, Daud, Imran, Siraj, and Safeer Khan highlight the urgent need for enhanced security measures and regional cooperation to ensure peace and stability along Pakistan’s western borders.
