PDMA Alerts Upper KP Districts on Glacial Flood Risks Amid Rising Temperatures

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a warning for the upper districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) regarding the risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs). This alert highlights concerns that rising temperatures may accelerate glacier melting through May 31, increasing flood risks.

Heavy rainfall is forecasted in areas including Chitral, Dir, Swat, and Kohistan, which could further elevate the chances of glacial lake breaches and sudden flash floods in these vulnerable regions. In response, the PDMA has instructed district administrations to enhance their preparedness and implement emergency response plans promptly.

Authorities have been directed to intensify monitoring efforts in sensitive zones and ensure early warning systems remain operational. Rescue teams are required to have machinery ready and maintain a state of readiness for any emergency that may arise. The PDMA cautioned that flooding in streams and nullahs could pose significant dangers, potentially sweeping away vehicles, especially in low-lying and mountainous terrains.

Citizens are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and stay clear of hazardous areas. Residents in high-risk locations are urged to relocate livestock and valuable possessions to safer sites as a precautionary measure. All relief organizations have been instructed to remain on alert for immediate deployment if needed.

In a significant development, the PDMA’s Emergency Operation Centre is fully operational, providing a helpline at 1700 for public assistance during emergencies. This comprehensive alert aims to mitigate the impact of potential floods and safeguard communities across the upper districts of KP.
