India is preparing to place orders exceeding $2 billion (over Rs166 billion) for military drones from domestic manufacturers this year, representing the country’s largest-ever procurement of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). This move reflects a strategic response to shifting regional and global conflict dynamics that are reshaping modern warfare tactics.
The procurement process is reportedly in advanced stages, with deliveries expected within 18 to 24 months. This marks a significant increase from recent government purchases of tactical-class drones, which were valued at around Rs30 billion ($313 million).
The Drone Federation of India (DFI), an industry body representing more than 550 companies collaborating closely with New Delhi, indicated that tactical drone acquisitions could surpass Rs200 billion (over $2 billion) in this next phase. DFI President Smit Shah noted that these orders are likely to proceed through a fast-track procurement channel designed to address urgent operational needs.
While the defence ministry has not issued an immediate comment, this large-scale procurement underscores a profound shift in the region’s security posture following heightened border tensions last year.
In a significant development, the push for drone expansion follows cross-border clashes between India and Pakistan in May of the previous year, during which both sides deployed UAVs extensively for the first time. This standoff demonstrated the powerful offensive potential of cost-effective drone technology, echoing lessons from conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, where unmanned systems have lowered operational costs and prompted a reevaluation of traditional military strategies.
Military analysts emphasize that integrating drone technology has become essential for modern armed forces. Ramesh Chandra Padhi, a former senior army officer and current executive at IG Defence, a company specializing in unmanned aerial and short-range missile systems, confirmed that the Indian military is leveraging emergency and expedited procurement channels to accelerate large-scale drone induction.
This procurement initiative aligns with a broader surge in defence spending. In March, India’s defence ministry approved a substantial Rs2.38 trillion ($24.85 billion) proposal covering transport aircraft, missile infrastructure, and “remotely piloted strike aircraft,” the official term for armed combat drones.
The influx of investment is rapidly transforming India’s domestic drone industry, which currently includes over 600 firms and component manufacturers, with at least 100 focused exclusively on defence applications. To boost production capacity, the government has expanded funding mechanisms such as the Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) program, which supports early-stage prototypes and enables startups and smaller companies to secure initial orders and scale manufacturing more rapidly.
Additionally, the defence ministry has relaxed stringent testing requirements, opened procurement sectors traditionally dominated by state entities to private industry, and encouraged the armed forces to issue repeat and interim orders. This approach allows private manufacturers to continuously improve their products based on real-time military feedback.
Industry representatives highlight that these policy changes are helping consolidate the sector, moving it away from a fragmented base of small players. The combination of clear government support and long-term order visibility has attracted significant venture capital investment and fostered strategic partnerships with established defence conglomerates, positioning India’s domestic industry to meet the growing military demand for advanced drone systems.
