Pakistan to Launch Fisheries and Aquaculture Research Centre in Karachi

Pakistan is moving forward with plans to establish a specialized fisheries and aquaculture research centre in Karachi. This initiative aims to enhance scientific research and innovation in marine biology, fisheries management, and aquaculture practices. The centre will serve as a hub for developing sustainable methods to increase fish production and support the livelihoods of coastal communities.

Karachi, being Pakistan’s largest port city and a major fishing hub, provides a strategic location for this research facility. The centre is expected to collaborate with local fishermen, academic institutions, and international experts to address challenges such as overfishing, habitat degradation, and climate change impacts on marine ecosystems. This development aligns with Pakistan’s broader goals of food security and economic growth through sustainable use of natural resources.

In a significant development for the country’s blue economy, the research centre will also focus on advancing aquaculture technologies, which have the potential to reduce pressure on wild fish stocks. By fostering innovation and knowledge exchange, the centre aims to position Pakistan as a regional leader in fisheries science and aquaculture. This project is anticipated to create new employment opportunities and contribute to the socio-economic upliftment of coastal populations.
