Trump Says Iran Seeks Ceasefire Amid Rising Tensions, US Sets Conditions

US President Donald Trump announced that Iran’s leadership has reached out to Washington seeking a ceasefire following weeks of escalating hostilities. He characterized the current Iranian leadership as significantly less radical and more astute than previous regimes, indicating a possible shift in Tehran’s approach.

Despite this development, Trump emphasized that the United States will not immediately cease military operations. He stipulated that any consideration of a ceasefire would depend on the Strait of Hormuz—a critical artery for global oil shipments—being “open, free, and clear.” This waterway’s strategic importance stems from the fact that a large portion of the world’s oil supply transits through it.

Until these conditions are satisfied, Trump warned that the US would maintain military pressure on Iran, underscoring a firm stance on curbing Tehran’s capabilities. Meanwhile, Iranian officials have neither confirmed nor responded to the claim of a ceasefire request, leaving the situation uncertain.

The ongoing conflict continues to destabilize the region and disrupt global energy markets, with diplomatic efforts yet to yield a resolution. In a related context, several NATO allies have expressed reluctance to support US military involvement. France and Italy limited their cooperation, refusing offensive roles and denying access to bases. Germany explicitly stated, “This is not our war,” while Spain blocked US use of its airspace. The United Kingdom initially declined offensive support but later agreed to defensive cooperation.

Trump criticized NATO for failing to back US operations in Iran, labeling the alliance a “paper tiger” and asserting that allies “weren’t there” when needed. He warned that the US might reciprocate by withdrawing support, stating, “Now the USA won’t be there to help you anymore, just like you weren’t there for us.” The president also mentioned that the conflict, which began after the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khomeini on February 28, could conclude within “two to three weeks.” However, he revealed that the US is “seriously considering withdrawing from NATO” amid these tensions.
