PlayStation 6 Base Model May Exclude Disc Drive and Offer Limited Storage

The forthcoming PlayStation 6 could disappoint gamers who favor physical game collections, as the base model might not include a disc drive. A hardware insider known as KeplerL2 revealed on NeoGAF that the unconfirmed console may omit this feature entirely.

When asked about storage, KeplerL2 indicated that the PS6’s base version could come with just 1TB of internal SSD space, mirroring the capacity found in most current PS5 models. This is notable since storage capacities typically increase with new console generations, but Sony might opt for minimal or no upgrades this time around.

This decision is likely influenced by the ongoing global shortage of AI-driven RAM components, which has also sparked rumors that the PS6 launch, originally expected in late 2027, might be delayed. While Sony usually equips base PS5 models with 2TB drives, current supply constraints could prevent this for the next generation.

The potential removal of the disc drive is expected to upset a segment of users. Although Sony introduced a disc-less PS5 model in 2020, it also offers a separate disc drive accessory. It remains uncertain whether a similar solution will be available for the PS6.

Despite the rise of digital game sales, many gamers still prefer owning physical copies. This preference is driven by concerns over digital storefront closures and the appeal of building tangible game libraries. Additionally, used games often come with attractive discounts, further motivating physical ownership.
