Indiana Fever GM Amber Cox signals defense focus for offseason

The Indiana Fever will need to focus on defense and size in the frontcourt after their early exit from the 2026 playoffs. Indiana lost in the first round to the eventual champion, the Las Vegas Aces, and the team’s front office has already turned its attention to the offseason.

The Fever were one of the most productive offensive teams in the league for much of the season. Their defense, however, was a weakness. They finished the regular season as the ninth-most defensively efficient team in the WNBA, and they were the only playoff team in the bottom half of the standings in that category.

Aces exploit Fever’s defensive weakness in playoff series

The Aces took advantage of that weakness in their three-game series. Reigning MVP A’ja Wilson set up in the paint, while Indiana struggled to contain high-volume perimeter shooters.

In her exit interview, General Manager Amber Cox addressed these issues directly. She said a “combined effort to add some depth and a little more defense to the overall roster is a must.”

Cox outlines frontcourt depth and perimeter needs

Cox identified two priorities for the offseason. The first is backup depth in the frontcourt. “I think, moving forward, the front we gotta make sure we got some depth behind AB or maybe at the four,” she said.

The second is perimeter defense. Cox said the team needs more production from the wing spot and players who can slow down the league’s elite scorers. “The overarching theme is we need to get better on the defensive end of the floor,” she said.

Clark and Mitchell central as free agency approaches

Guard Caitlin Clark also pointed to defense in her own exit interview. “As far as when the season ended and now as we head into next season, defense is probably our biggest focus,” she said.

The front office is working toward extending Clark’s contract and acquiring Kelsey Mitchell, an unrestricted free agent. Fans and analysts are now considering which players the franchise might target to stabilise a core that includes Mitchell, Aliyah Boston and Clark. Given Cox’s emphasis on defensive players and interior help, the Fever are expected to be active and strategic this offseason.
