WNBA veteran Sophie Cunningham has offered a blunt response to critics and media commentators who have speculated about her future with the Indiana Fever. Her message is that everything happens in its own time.
The speculation came as the WNBA offseason began to take shape while the Fever’s post-season continued. Guard Cunningham appeared unbothered by discussion over whether the franchise should offload the sharpshooter, a debate that had played out in commentary over the previous few days.
Cunningham hits back at critics on social media
The conversation grew louder after an influential column from a national sports personality urged the Fever to explore other options as it builds its upcoming roster. Cunningham did not wait long to respond. She refused to let critics speak on her behalf and called them out on her social media and in the pages of her podcast.
“The moon will continue to shine whether or not you like it,” she wrote on social media. “Just like the moon will shine when the time is right, so will we all.” She also shared an encouraging message suggesting that the universe takes its time to shine on people.
Veteran guard points to value beyond the box score
Cunningham repeated her argument in a podcast episode, pointing to on-court value that does not always appear in the box score. She averaged 41.9 percent from three-point range and was effective over 22.2 minutes per game, which she said goes beyond the numbers.
With general manager Amber Cox and the Fever front office exploring all options for next season, Cunningham’s comments are likely to draw attention from WNBA fans and critics. Described as tough, vocal and brash, the veteran has handled the media frenzy with dignity, but she has yet to reveal her next move.
