Gill Hits Fastest ODI Double Century as India Chase 406 vs West Indies

Shubman Gill delivered a historic performance by scoring the fastest double century in one-day international cricket, guiding India to an eight-wicket victory over West Indies in the second ODI of their three-match series held in Guwahati on Wednesday. India successfully chased a daunting target of 406 runs, achieving the second-highest successful run chase in ODI history.

The world’s top-ranked ODI batsman remained unbeaten on 223 runs off just 133 balls, reaching the quickest century of his career before accelerating to the fastest double hundred ever recorded in the format. Gill, 27, had previously recorded his maiden ODI double century against New Zealand in Hyderabad in 2023.

Opening partner Rohit Sharma set a strong foundation with a 72-ball century, surpassing 12,000 career ODI runs during a blistering 255-run partnership with Gill. After Rohit’s dismissal, Gill maintained the momentum, anchoring India’s pursuit of the massive target with composure and aggression.

Earlier, West Indies posted their highest-ever ODI total of 405 for 7 in 50 overs, powered by centuries from John Campbell, Shai Hope, and Amir Jangoo. This marked only the sixth occasion in ODI history where three batsmen from the same team scored centuries in a single innings. Their total eclipsed their previous best of 389, set against England at St George’s in 2019.

Campbell and Hope combined for a 110-run partnership off 79 balls for the second wicket, followed by a 182-run stand between Hope and Jangoo for the third wicket, laying the groundwork for the record total. Campbell’s rapid century included five sixes, notably hitting 22 runs in one over bowled by Prasidh Krishna.

Despite the West Indies’ imposing total, India completed the chase with 39 balls remaining, thanks largely to Gill’s unbeaten 223. The victory was achieved with eight wickets in hand, underscoring India’s dominant batting display.

India’s bowling unit faced challenges, with pacers Prasidh Krishna and Naman Dhir sustaining injuries during the match. Debutant Auqib Nabi struggled, conceding 84 runs, which ranks as the fourth-highest runs given by an Indian bowler on ODI debut. Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav were the main wicket-takers for India, each claiming two wickets.

West Indies scored 36 runs in the final five overs, finishing with a run rate of 8.10. Their strong batting effort came shortly after reports surfaced that the team’s players would face a 25 percent pay cut as part of broader financial austerity measures.

This match was the second in the three-match ODI series, with India having won the opener by eight wickets in Thiruvananthapuram, taking a 1-0 lead. In that first game, West Indies posted 295 for 7, highlighted by Justin Greaves’ 101 and Campbell’s 62.

Kuldeep Yadav was India’s standout bowler in the series opener, taking four wickets for 40 runs. India chased down the target in 41.4 overs, losing only two wickets, with Virat Kohli scoring an unbeaten 139 and captain Shubman Gill contributing 110. Kohli also reached the milestone of 15,000 ODI runs and recorded his 55th ODI century during the match.
