Fijian Rugby Player Dies from Suspected Heatstroke During Japan Training

Saimoni Vunilagi, a 26-year-old professional rugby player from Fiji, has tragically passed away following a suspected heatstroke incident during a training session with his team in southern Japan. The club announced his death on Saturday.

The back rower was hospitalized on Monday after exhibiting symptoms consistent with severe heatstroke while training with Kyushu Electric Power Kyuden Voltex, commonly known as Kyushu KV, based in Fukuoka. Despite medical efforts, he died on Friday morning.

Japan has been enduring an intense heatwave recently, with temperatures soaring above 40 °C in several cities. The government has officially labeled such days as “brutally hot,” highlighting the extreme weather conditions.

In a statement, Kyushu KV expressed sorrow over the loss, noting that although Vunilagi had joined the team only recently, his generous nature and dynamic playing style had generated high expectations for the upcoming season. The club extended their deepest condolences to his family and prayed for his soul’s peace.

Meanwhile, Japan’s national rugby team faced Australia in a closely contested match on Saturday evening in Osaka, where the oppressive heat led to mandatory water breaks during both halves to ensure player safety.
