San Diego Overcomes 4-0 Deficit to Beat Arizona 6-4 in Mexico City Opener

San Diego mounted an impressive comeback to overcome a four-run deficit and secure a 6-4 victory over Arizona in the opening game of the 2026 Mexico City Series on Saturday.

The Diamondbacks appeared dominant early, building a 4-0 lead that included a two-run home run by Alek Thomas, who honored his Mexican heritage by entering the field wrapped in his national flag.

However, the Padres reversed the momentum with a powerful late-game surge. Ty France ignited the rally with two solo home runs, setting the stage for a dramatic seventh inning. San Diego capitalized on Arizona’s miscues during this chaotic frame, combining timely hits with three walks, an error, a balk, and two sacrifice flies. Gavin Sheets delivered the pivotal two-run single that sealed the Padres’ comeback.

Arizona’s difficulties worsened when shortstop Geraldo Perdomo left the game due to a sprained left ankle sustained after committing an error during the rally.

With this win, San Diego preserved its flawless record in Mexico City Series play and extended its strong run, having won 13 of its last 15 games.

A Padres team official praised the squad’s resilience, stating, “We never give up, especially in a ballpark like this,” highlighting their ability to perform under pressure.

Despite the loss, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo remained hopeful, focusing on positive aspects and expressing confidence that his team could rebound in the series finale.

Looking ahead, San Diego’s Michael King will face Arizona’s Kyle Nelson in the second and final game of the series on Sunday at Estadio Alfredo Harp Helú.
