Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is presiding over a vital meeting in Islamabad on the deteriorating security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). Several proposals are under consideration, including the imposition of an emergency, according to sources.
One key proposal is to declare a state of emergency in KP under Article 232 of the Constitution. Another would treat 12 severely unrest-affected districts separately and place them under direct federal control. Those districts include eight from the former FATA region, along with Lakki Marwat, Karak and Kohat.
Proposed secretariat, administrator and funding for districts
Under the federal control plan, a separate secretariat, an administrator and dedicated funding would be set up for these districts. Sources said another option being discussed is delegating chief executive powers to KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi.
Final decisions will be approved by the federal cabinet after recommendations from the Ministry of Law and the Ministry of Interior, sources said.
