The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) has cautioned the government against bringing in emergency rule or governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, describing both options as unwelcome and perilous. The party’s spokesperson, Aslam Ghauri, made the remarks on the programme Sawal Yeh Hai.
Ghauri said a government delegation had given Maulana Fazlur Rehman assurances during a meeting that neither measure would be put in place. He said the party had made its opposition clear and asked why the government would seek talks if it planned such steps.
Government assurances and JUI-F objections to emergency rule
Ghauri warned that governor’s rule in a single province could also carry consequences for the federal government. He stressed that “Nothing should be done that could dismantle the democratic system,” and urged politicians not to weaken the framework on which their own political futures rest. He also described the role of the KP governor as highly negative.
Concerns over Balochistan, Karachi and interior Sindh
Ghauri questioned whether governor’s rule could be applied in other provinces, pointing to Balochistan, Karachi and interior Sindh. He said that if such a move began in KP, conditions in Balochistan would be even worse, and asked whether governor’s rule would be imposed there too.
Turning to Karachi and other parts of Sindh, he asked how far such measures could be extended.
