The federal government has reportedly told the Pakistan People’s Party that the moment has arrived to impose Governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, according to PPP sources. Those sources said the government and security institutions have voiced heightened concerns linked to the PTI long march.
According to the same sources, authorities have warned that Governor’s rule could be imposed within 24 hours. The coming day is being described as decisive for whether an emergency or Governor’s rule is enforced in the province.
PPP leadership weighs dialogue against the deadline
President Asif Ali Zardari, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and other senior leaders have held consultations on the matter. Sources said coordinators asked how long unproductive talks should go on, while representatives of the PPP and government observed that PTI decision-makers had not reached a firm agreement.
Bilawal, however, reportedly urged that dialogue continue to the end and that efforts be made to persuade the PTI leadership. Backdoor channels have been reopened in search of a middle ground, and a final message has been conveyed to the PTI to accept the government’s terms.
Federal government finalises plan as key KP meeting nears
Sources said on Saturday that the federal government had finished preparing its plan for the days ahead. A crucial meeting on Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is scheduled for today, with key decisions expected amid speculation about an emergency or Governor’s rule in that northwestern province.
A session chaired by the prime minister took place last night, attended by senior ministers and high security officials. Participants reviewed reports from security and intelligence agencies, and the prime minister is reportedly weighing legal and constitutional options while briefing all stakeholders on the government’s stance.
