Energy Minister Awais Leghari emphasized Pakistan’s strong interest in enhancing bilateral ties with Russia, identifying significant opportunities for collaboration across sectors such as agriculture, energy, tourism, and information technology.
In a detailed discussion with a Russian news agency, Leghari, who also serves as co-chairman of the Pakistan-Russia Intergovernmental Commission, described the partnership between the two nations as having immense untapped potential. He noted that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has actively sought to engage Russian President Vladimir Putin at various international forums, reflecting a mutual commitment to deepen relations.
Leghari underscored Russia’s vital role in fostering regional peace, security, and economic development. He highlighted the commission’s pivotal function in facilitating dialogue on diverse areas of shared interest, thereby advancing bilateral cooperation.
Regarding trade and connectivity, the minister pointed out that expanding railway networks could significantly boost commerce between Pakistan and Russia. He also mentioned Pakistan’s involvement in the International North-South Transport Corridor, which promises to enhance trade routes and regional integration across Eurasia.
Improved transportation infrastructure, Leghari explained, would open new avenues for economic collaboration by offering more efficient connections between the two countries and linking Pakistan to broader regional markets.
Addressing the Indus Waters Treaty, Leghari issued a stern warning that any efforts to infringe upon Pakistan’s water rights would be tantamount to an “act of war.” He urged that any disputes related to the treaty be resolved through its established mechanisms, cautioning that unresolved issues could have far-reaching consequences beyond the immediate region.
In a significant development, Leghari’s remarks come amid Islamabad’s broader strategy to expand engagement with Moscow, particularly in economic, energy, and regional connectivity sectors. He reiterated Pakistan’s eagerness to explore new avenues of cooperation that would foster economic growth and reinforce bilateral relations.
