Army Chiefs Vow Decisive Action Against May 9-Style Unrest

The corps commanders issued a stern warning on Friday, declaring that any efforts to incite violent disturbances or replicate the unrest seen on May 9 would be met with decisive and impartial action. This announcement was made during the 277th Corps Commanders Conference, led by Chief of Defence Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi.

In a significant development, the commanders expressed unwavering solidarity with Saudi Arabia, condemning recent Houthi attacks on the kingdom. They underscored Pakistan’s legitimate right to conduct targeted operations against terrorism originating from Afghanistan, emphasizing the importance of maintaining internal stability.

The forum highlighted that any attempt to provoke violent disorder, regardless of the justification, would be addressed firmly through the application of force and legal measures, without hesitation or discrimination. The commanders also held the Taliban leadership accountable for the serious consequences of permitting terrorism to be exploited as a tool by India.

While appreciating the ongoing success of intelligence-driven counterterrorism efforts by law enforcement agencies, the commanders acknowledged that military and police actions alone would not suffice to eradicate terrorism. They called for stronger administrative and governance reforms, advocating for governance to be more accessible at the grassroots level to effectively combat militancy.

Effective public communication on the causes and mechanisms of terrorism was deemed essential, alongside reinforcing the narrative against militancy. The commanders stressed the need to dismantle the “crime-terror nexus” operating under the protection of certain groups and urged for enhanced police capabilities.

Field Marshal Asim Munir directed military formations to continue bolstering intelligence-based operations and to improve defensive capacities through modern technology, advanced training, and integrated warfare strategies.

Regarding regional security, the commanders strongly condemned the Houthi assaults on Saudi Arabia and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to safeguarding the sanctity of the Haramain Sharifain. They welcomed the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Türkiye, viewing it as a crucial step toward strengthening strategic ties and defense cooperation among the three nations.

The forum reiterated Pakistan’s stance that the Kashmir dispute must be resolved in line with United Nations Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.

Paying homage to the sacrifices of armed forces personnel, law enforcement officials, and civilians who lost their lives defending the country, the commanders offered a Fateha in their honor.

Field Marshal Asim Munir affirmed that the armed forces, backed by the nation’s steadfast support, remain fully prepared to defend Pakistan’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national security. The conference also reviewed the current security situation and discussed measures to enhance the country’s defense and internal security.
