The federal government announced on Friday that beneficiaries of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s fuel relief scheme are not required to have their vehicles or motorcycles registered in their own names to receive the Rs500 weekly petrol relief.
At a joint press conference in Islamabad, Minister of State for Finance and Revenue Bilal Azhar Kayani and Minister of Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja shared updates on the scheme’s progress. They revealed that within one week, 4.7 million people across the country had benefited, with a total of 5,875,199 individuals registered under the program so far.
Shaza Fatima Khawaja added that 6,131,781 tokens had been issued under the scheme, which covers motorcycles, rickshaws, Qingqi rickshaws, and small cars. Bilal Azhar Kayani clarified that applicants only need to possess the vehicle’s documents and have physical possession of the vehicle to qualify, regardless of whether it is registered in their name.
The minister emphasized that motorcycle, rickshaw, and Qingqi users receive Rs500 worth of free petrol every week. The government has streamlined the process to ensure the relief reaches eligible citizens directly and without unnecessary hurdles.
Shaza highlighted that the scheme aims to provide direct financial relief to citizens despite rising international petroleum prices. She noted the use of a digital system to facilitate registration and ensure transparency in delivering the benefits.
She also mentioned ongoing efforts to simplify the registration process further, aiming to extend the scheme’s reach to more eligible individuals. All relevant institutions are collaborating to implement the program effectively, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif regularly monitoring its progress.
Bilal Azhar Kayani reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring the fuel relief reaches deserving citizens transparently. The initiative links public relief efforts with modern digital technologies and maintains coordination among various institutions for smooth execution.
Both ministers underscored the role of technology in accelerating registration and delivering relief efficiently, minimizing bureaucratic complications for beneficiaries.
