Iran’s Interim Leader Vows Resistance Against Israel and US Amid Escalating Conflict

In a defiant address broadcast on state television, Iran’s interim leader Masoud Pezeshkian declared that the nation would never capitulate to pressures from Israel and the United States. Speaking as the Middle East conflict entered its second week, Pezeshkian emphasized that any hopes held by adversaries for an unconditional Iranian surrender were futile and would remain unfulfilled.

His remarks come in the wake of a dramatic escalation that began on February 28, when coordinated strikes by Israel and the US targeted Iranian positions, resulting in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. This unprecedented event has since ignited a broader regional confrontation, with Iran retaliating through a series of missile and drone attacks aimed at Israeli and American interests, particularly in Gulf countries.

Masoud Pezeshkian, who is part of a three-member interim leadership council established after Khamenei’s assassination, took the opportunity to address the wider repercussions of Iran’s military actions. He extended a formal apology to neighboring nations that have been inadvertently affected by Iranian strikes, clarifying that Iran’s military operations are defensive and targeted only at direct aggressors.

“On behalf of myself and the Iranian people, I express regret to those neighboring states that have suffered collateral damage from our defensive measures,” Pezeshkian stated. He further announced a strategic decision by the interim leadership council to halt attacks on neighboring countries unless those nations initiate hostilities against Iran. This move signals an attempt to contain the conflict and avoid further regional destabilization.

The current situation remains highly volatile, with the potential for further escalation as diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions have yet to gain traction. Iran’s steadfast refusal to yield under pressure underscores the deep-rooted complexities of the conflict, which involves not only military confrontations but also longstanding political and ideological rivalries in the region.

As the international community watches closely, the interim leadership’s firm stance highlights Tehran’s commitment to defending its sovereignty and interests despite facing significant military and political challenges. The coming days will be critical in determining whether this cycle of retaliation can be broken or if the region will witness a further intensification of hostilities.
