The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has formed district-level committees to check private school buildings across the province after a classroom roof collapsed at Al-Khair Education System in Peshawar’s Dir Colony. A notification issued by the provincial Elementary and Secondary Education Department said the panels will survey and physically examine the premises for structural defects, safety hazards and other faults that could put students, teachers and staff at risk.
Committee membership and reporting deadline
Each committee will be headed by the District Monitoring Officer of the Education Monitoring Authority (EMA) in its district. Members will include the relevant District Education Officer, Sub-District Education Officers (SDEOs) and Assistant District Education Officers (ADEOs) handling planning and development, a representative of the Communications and Works (C&W) Department, and other relevant officials.
The panels have been told to submit detailed reports, including recommended corrective steps, to the department within three days of being formed.
Scope of inspections and safety ratings
Inspections will cover every private school building in the districts, whether the school owns the premises or runs from a rented property. Committees will also grade each building as safe, in need of repairs or improvements, or potentially unsafe for use.
The notification said authorities in the relevant districts must be told immediately about any building identified as potentially dangerous.
