Police in Peshawar have arrested the owner of a private school in the Dir Colony area after its roof caved in, killing at least 30 children and two female teachers. Several other people remain in critical condition.
The collapse set off a major rescue operation at the site of the private school.
Police link the tragedy to poor construction
The Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) in Peshawar confirmed the arrest and said the school had been operating under the name of an educational trust. He said the building had been badly built, a factor that contributed to the disaster.
Rescuers held back by unstable building and tight lanes
Rescue work is being hampered by the weakened structure of the building and the narrow roads surrounding it. A rescue service spokesperson said heavy machinery has not been used because the building remains structurally unstable.
The confined streets have also made it hard to bring heavy equipment close to the damaged structure. Crews are still dealing with these obstacles as the response continues.
Prime minister and KP governor express grief
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep sorrow over the collapse, offering prayers for those who died, including the children, and sending condolences to the bereaved families. He prayed for the injured to recover quickly and directed authorities to ensure they receive the best possible medical treatment. He also instructed officials to speed up rescue and relief operations at the site.
KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi also voiced grief over the deaths of the children. He sought a detailed report on the incident and directed the authorities to determine what caused the collapse. In a statement, he said, “The loss of precious lives of innocent children is an extremely painful tragedy,” and extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.
