At least four children were killed when the roof of a private school gave way in Peshawar’s Dir Colony, a spokesperson for Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) said on Thursday. Twenty students and teachers were moved to hospital for treatment.
The spokesperson said more people were feared buried under the rubble, raising concerns that the death toll could increase. Teams are searching the site for those believed to be trapped.
Rescue teams search debris as toll fears grow
Rescue 1122 said several children were feared trapped after the collapse, and more than 10 injured children had been taken to hospital. The rescue operation is still under way at the site.
Collapse follows deadly Lahore tuition centre tragedy
The Peshawar incident comes after a separate disaster on June 30, when fourteen children died after the roof of a private tuition centre fell in the Kahna suburb of Lahore. Most of those recovered were between seven and 11 years old. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif called that incident a “heartbreaking tragedy” and said “every individual found accountable will face the full force of the law.”
