KP governor raises police martyrs’ compensation package

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi has announced a significant rise in payments for police officers who are killed or wounded while on duty. The package for lower-ranking personnel goes from Rs11 million to Rs17 million. The move was made public at a ceremony for slain officers held at the Governor House in Peshawar.

The revised scheme also raises payouts for senior officers, replaces residential plots with cash for bereaved households, and adds support for the schooling and weddings of the children left behind. Kundi made the announcement while honouring those who lost their lives in service.

Higher payouts for ranks from constables to senior officers

Kundi said constables, head constables, assistant sub-inspectors, sub-inspectors and inspectors will now receive Rs17 million. Deputy superintendents and superintendents of police will get Rs25 million, while senior superintendents, assistant inspectors general and officers in grades 18 and 19 will receive Rs30 million.

Deputy inspectors general, the provincial police chief and officers in grade 20 and above will be paid Rs35 million. The governor also increased help for officers hurt on duty. Those who suffer permanent disabilities will see their amount rise from Rs500,000 to Rs5 million, while seriously injured personnel will receive Rs1.5 million, up from Rs100,000.

Cash replaces residential plots for bereaved families

Under the new arrangements, families of martyred personnel will receive cash instead of plots. Families of constables and head constables will get Rs18 million in place of five-marla plots. Families of assistant sub-inspectors, sub-inspectors and inspectors will receive Rs25 million instead of seven-marla plots.

The families of martyred DSPs and SPs will be entitled to Rs35 million in place of 10-marla plots. For the families of SSPs and higher-ranking officers, the cash figure is Rs70 million, replacing one-kanal plots. Kundi also said close relatives of police personnel killed in terrorist attacks may receive between Rs3 million and Rs5 million, subject to the applicable criteria.

Support for children and wider police welfare measures

The governor said the daughters of martyred officers will receive Rs1 million each for their marriages. He also pledged financial help for the education and other needs of the children of police martyrs. He argued that their families should not be left to absorb the financial fallout of losing a breadwinner in the fight against terrorism.

Kundi said the provincial police would receive a welfare package modelled on arrangements in Punjab. He added that police salaries had been raised to bring them in line with those in other provinces.

At the ceremony, he handed out allotment letters for residential plots to families of personnel killed in terrorist incidents in Bannu, Lakki Marwat and other districts. He urged the government and all state institutions to stand behind the police, saying a coordinated strategy was needed to eliminate terrorism.

Security backdrop and the path to formal approval

The announcement comes as the province faces persistent security challenges and renewed federal intervention, after emergency and governor’s rule were imposed on October 11. On October 13, the governor chaired a high-level meeting attended by Chief Secretary Dr Muhammad Fakhar-e-Alam Irfan, Inspector General of Police Zulfiqar Hameed and other senior officials. The meeting reviewed police salaries and welfare arrangements for the families of martyred and injured personnel.

According to a Governor House statement issued after that meeting, Kundi directed officials to prepare a summary with proposals for salary increases and an enhanced compensation package. The proposals included cash in place of plots, financial support for the marriages of martyrs’ daughters, and an endowment fund to cover their children’s educational expenses. The Governor House said the summary was to be finalised and submitted for further action.

The formal notification and implementation of the individual measures remain key to determining when eligible personnel and their families can receive the enhanced benefits.
