Punjab women get rickshaw driving training in Lahore

Women in Lahore have been trained to drive rickshaws under an initiative ordered by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. The programme is intended to make women self-reliant and empowered.

The traffic police have extended a scheme that already offered driving training for taxis and scooties. The Punjab Traffic Police ran the session with a private university and trained 34 women at driving schools in Bahria Town and Manawa.

City Traffic Officer (CTO) Syed Abdul Rahim Shirazi said the programme aimed to create respectable job opportunities for women. He said trained women can now take up rickshaw driving as a profession.

Shirazi said the force was not only providing training but also empowering women to earn an independent livelihood. He added that men and women both play a vital role in the development and social fabric of society.
