The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) issued a flood warning for Nullah Lai in Rawalpindi on Wednesday following three consecutive days of heavy rainfall in Rawalpindi and Islamabad since Monday. The Rawalpindi administration activated flood sirens as the rain intensified, with water levels at Kattarian rising above 22 feet and reaching 16 feet near Gawalmandi Bridge, up from previous measurements of 19 feet and 15 feet respectively.
Later, rainfall subsided in both cities, allowing the water levels in Nullah Lai to decrease after reaching their daily peak. The flood control room reported that the water at Kattarian dropped from 21 feet to 17 feet, while the level at Gawalmandi stabilized at 17 feet. Despite this, intermittent showers continued across parts of the twin cities.
Meanwhile, the meteorological department forecasted further rain, wind, and thundershowers in several upper and central regions of the country through August 21, with occasional breaks. Heavy rainfall is expected during this period.
Rawalpindi recorded significant rainfall amounts, including 67mm at Pirwadhai, 59mm at New Kattarian, 55mm at Shamsabad, and 47mm at Katcheri. Islamabad also experienced heavy downpours, with 90mm at Saidpur, 81mm at Golra, 78mm at Zero Point, and 70mm at Bokra.
The PMD explained that monsoon currents are penetrating the northern parts of the country, while a westerly wave is also influencing the region. Elsewhere across Pakistan, hot and humid weather conditions are prevailing.
Earlier, Rescue 1122 issued public announcements around Nullah Lai, advising residents to avoid unnecessary travel and remain cautious due to rising water levels. Officials urged people to keep children away from stormwater drains and electrical poles to prevent accidents during the rains. Communities living along Nullah Lai were reminded to adhere to safety guidelines and stay alert.
Azizullah Khan, Managing Director of the Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa), stated that teams have been deployed along Nullah Lai and in vulnerable low-lying areas to monitor water levels and respond promptly to emergencies. Heavy machinery has been positioned in locations including Sadiqabad, Dhok Khaba, Pirwadhai, Arya Mohalla, and Bohar Bazaar to assist in flood management.
He added that garbage which had been carried into Nullah Lai during the previous rainfall was cleared in time, ensuring unobstructed water flow. Azizullah emphasized the importance of not dumping waste into drains or removing sewer covers, warning that such actions could block drainage systems and worsen flooding risks.
