Sindh Schools and Colleges Closed on August 4 for Chehlum Observance

The Sindh School Education Department has declared that all educational institutions, both public and private, across the province will be closed on August 4, 2026. This closure is in observance of the Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA).

The official notification states that all government and private schools under the School Education Department’s jurisdiction will observe a holiday on the 20th Safar 1448 AH, which corresponds to Tuesday, August 4. This decision follows a resolution made during the Steering Committee meeting held on February 12, 2026.

In a related development, the Sindh Home Department has implemented a province-wide ban on pillion riding for the day of Chehlum. This measure aims to ensure public safety during the religious observances.

The Chehlum commemorates the 40th day after the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and the martyrs of Karbala, a solemn event marking their sacrifice in the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD. The day is observed annually on the 20th of Safar-ul-Muzaffar, with mourning processions that include Alam, Tazia, and Zuljinah being held in various cities throughout Sindh.

Additionally, the Home Department has extended the enforcement of Section 144 across the province for an additional month starting August 1. This extension prohibits activities such as wall chalking, rallies, demonstrations, and the public display of weapons, aiming to maintain order during the period of observance.
