UK Launches New Digital E-Visa System to Streamline Travel for Pakistanis

The United Kingdom has recently unveiled a modernized e-visa system specifically designed for Pakistani travelers, marking a significant shift from the traditional visa sticker method to a fully digital process. This new initiative eliminates the need for physical visa stamps in passports, aiming to make the entire application and verification process more efficient and secure for applicants.

Under this updated system, Pakistani nationals applying for UK visas will now complete their applications entirely online through the official UK Visas and Immigration portal. Following the submission, applicants are required to visit designated visa application centres only once, solely for biometric data collection such as fingerprints and photographs. This change means that after the biometric appointment, travelers will no longer have to return to the centre to collect their passports, a step that previously caused delays and inconvenience.

British High Commissioner to Pakistan, Jane Marriott, highlighted that successful visa applicants will receive a digital visa record accessible via their UK Visas and Immigration account. This digital record replaces the physical visa sticker and offers a more secure way to store and present visa information. Additionally, travelers will be provided with a unique “share code” which can be used at border control points and other official checkpoints to verify their visa status quickly and reliably.

Ms. Marriott emphasized that the introduction of this system is a major leap forward in simplifying travel procedures for Pakistanis visiting the UK. She pointed out that the digital visa system not only reduces the risk of lost or damaged documents but also speeds up the overall process, making it more user-friendly and secure. The move is expected to enhance the travel experience by cutting down on unnecessary visits to visa centres and streamlining immigration checks.

It is important to note that this digital visa system was initially piloted last year for student and work visa applicants, and following its success, it has now been expanded to cover a broader range of visa categories. The British government has also issued a clear advisory discouraging applicants from using third-party visa agents, urging them instead to apply directly through the official government website to avoid fraud and ensure application accuracy.

Overall, the launch of the e-visa system represents a significant modernization of the UK’s visa services for Pakistani citizens, promising faster processing times and greater convenience. This development is expected to encourage more travel between the two countries by making the visa application process less cumbersome and more transparent. As international travel continues to rebound, such digital advancements are crucial in facilitating smoother cross-border movement and strengthening bilateral ties.
