Karachi experiences overnight showers and strong winds amid deadly rain spell

Karachi was hit by light to heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds overnight on Friday, just hours after a severe thunderstorm caused at least six fatalities and injured three individuals due to electrocution and structural collapses. The death toll from the recent weather events over the past two days has risen to seven, with a fatal electrocution reported in Gulistan-e-Jauhar.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department forecasted continued intermittent rain, gusty winds, thunder, and isolated hailstorms across upper and southeastern Sindh districts, including scattered locations in Karachi and Hyderabad divisions. Thunder and lightning were reported in multiple areas, while light showers affected central, northern, and southern districts of the city.

Orangi Town and Chishti Nagar experienced steady rainfall, with some residents also witnessing brief hail. Intermittent showers fell in parts of Saddar, I.I. Chundrigar Road, and Burns Road, while North Nazimabad and Nazimabad saw light rain accompanied by lightning flashes. Other neighborhoods such as Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Liaquatabad, Old Golimar, Scheme 33, Malir Halt, Rifah-e-Aam, Garden, Surjani Town, and areas along M.A. Jinnah Road and Shahrah-e-Pakistan were lightly drenched, providing the port city with a rare overnight refreshment.

The current wet spell began on Thursday, when intermittent rains with isolated heavy downpours caused flooding in low-lying areas, disrupting traffic on major roads and leaving commuters stuck in slow-moving jams. Power supply was suspended on various feeders during the storm. At least five people died from electrocution in different parts of the city during the downpour. In Surjani’s Hassan Brohi Goth, a man was electrocuted while working inside his home. Similar fatal incidents occurred in PIB Colony and Surjani Sector 7-A, where a young girl also lost her life. Additional electrocution deaths were reported near MA Jinnah Road and in Ahsanabad along the Super Highway, where a worker came into contact with a live electrical source.

In Old Golimar, a wall collapsed onto a rickshaw during the rain, killing the driver instantly. Meanwhile, in Orangi Town, three children were injured when a house wall collapsed amid the heavy rainfall. Rescue teams responded swiftly, transporting the injured to nearby medical facilities.

On Thursday, rain, wind, and thunderstorms occurred sporadically across the province due to a strong westerly wave affecting most parts of the country, with conditions expected to persist in upper and central regions until April 4. Provincial and local authorities have taken prompt measures to manage rainwater drainage and maintain traffic flow.

meteorological data, Nazimabad recorded the highest rainfall in Karachi with 70mm, followed by Keamari with 56mm, Saadi Town 48mm, University Road 44mm, Bahria Town 44mm, Orangi Town 39mm, Gulshan-E-Maymar 36mm, Jinnah Terminal 35mm, Surjani Town 35mm, Airport Old Area and DHA Phase 2 each with 33mm, Faisal Base 30mm, North Karachi and Masroor Base 29mm, Korangi 18mm, and Gulshan-E-Hadeed 17mm up to the evening.

Elsewhere in Sindh, Mohenjo Daro recorded 50mm of rain, Jacobabad 22mm, Dadu 14mm, Hyderabad 13mm, Larkana 8mm, Padidan 3mm, Rohri, Khairpur, and Sakrand 2mm each, and Chhor and Mithi 1mm.

The meteorological department also forecasted further widespread intermittent rain, windstorms, thunderstorms, isolated hailstorms, and heavy rainfall in Mirpurkhas, Sanghar, Umerkot, Nagarparkar, Tharparkar, Dadu, Qambar, Shahdadkot, Kashmore, Jacobabad, Larkana, Sukkur, Ghotki, Khairpur, Shaheed Benazirabad, and Nowshera Feroze. Isolated showers are expected in Karachi, Hyderabad, Jamshoro, Thatta, Badin, and Sujawal districts.
