West Nile Virus Outbreak Claims Four Lives in North Macedonia

North Macedonia has reported four fatalities linked to West Nile virus among 38 confirmed infections recorded this year, with three deaths occurring within the last week, the Health Ministry announced on Wednesday. The virus primarily spreads through mosquito bites and can lead to severe, potentially fatal illness in approximately one out of every 150 infected individuals.

In a significant development, the World Health Organization has highlighted that rising temperatures across Europe are extending the active season and geographical range of mosquitoes, contributing to an increase in West Nile virus cases, notably in countries such as Greece and Italy during the summer months.

The Health Ministry’s data revealed that out of the 38 infected individuals, 28 were male and 10 female, with 33 patients aged over 60. Twelve new cases were identified just last week. Most infections were reported in the vicinity of the capital city, Skopje, and all patients required hospitalization.

Historically, the average number of West Nile virus infections during peak mosquito season from 2011 to 2025 was fewer than one case per week, indicating a recent surge in 2024. In response, authorities have intensified public awareness campaigns and implemented measures aimed at controlling the mosquito population to curb further spread.

Meanwhile, in neighboring Serbia, epidemiologist Dragana Plavsa noted that up to six cases have been recorded so far this year, underscoring the regional nature of the outbreak.
