FBR Extends Income Tax Return Filing Deadline to October 15

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has announced an extension for filing income tax returns for Tax Year 2026, moving the deadline to October 15. This extension grants taxpayers additional time to complete their submissions.

This decision comes just one day after the FBR had reminded taxpayers that September 30 was the final date to file their returns, warning that missing this deadline would result in substantially increased penalties.

Previously, the FBR had stated that individuals who failed to file by September 30 could face fines up to Rs25,000. Meanwhile, associations of persons and companies risked penalties of Rs50,000 and Rs100,000, respectively, starting from October 1.

Notably, the FBR had earlier refuted a notification circulating on social media that falsely claimed the deadline had been extended, clarifying that no such circular had been issued at that time.

In a significant development, the extension follows persistent appeals from trade bodies, chambers of commerce, and tax professionals. These groups highlighted ongoing technical difficulties with the IRIS portal, delays in the release of return forms, and challenges encountered by taxpayers in completing their filings.
