On April 2, 2026, a senior delegation from the World Bank conducted a comprehensive review of its 14 ongoing development projects in Sindh, collectively valued at $4.1 billion. The high-level meeting took place at the Chief Minister’s House in Karachi, underscoring the importance of these initiatives for the province’s socio-economic progress.

During the session, the World Bank representatives emphasized the significance of the construction of Karachi’s largest landfill site, describing it as a major milestone in the region’s waste management efforts. This landfill is a key component of the Solid Waste Emergency and Efficiency Project (SWEEP), which is designed to modernize and enhance waste management systems across Karachi, addressing the city’s growing environmental challenges.

The meeting was chaired by Senior Minister for Information and Transport, Sharjeel Memon, and included participation from several provincial ministers, senior bureaucrats, and planning officials. Their involvement highlights the collaborative approach between the provincial government and international partners to ensure the successful implementation of these projects.

Representing the World Bank, Operation Manager Gailius Draugelis, Hina Saleem, and Kamran Akbar were present in person, while Country Director Bolormaa Amgaabazar, Water Specialist Francois Onimus, and 24 other experts contributed remotely via video conference. This blend of in-person and virtual participation reflects the global nature of development cooperation and the commitment to maintaining momentum on these critical projects despite logistical challenges.
