Khawaja Asif Urges Sirajuddin Haqqani to Avoid Hostile Actions Against Pakistan

In a firm statement delivered on Friday, Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif addressed the Afghan Taliban leadership, specifically targeting Sirajuddin Haqqani, the acting Interior Minister of Afghanistan. Asif emphasized that while Haqqani and his family have been long-standing guests in Pakistan, it is imperative that they do not betray this hospitality by aligning themselves with forces hostile to Pakistan. He cautioned against allowing Afghan soil to be used as a base for activities against Pakistan’s national security interests.

Reflecting on the historical relationship between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban, Khawaja Asif recalled Pakistan’s unwavering support during the Soviet-Afghan war. He highlighted that Pakistan had provided refuge to millions of Afghan refugees, hosting them for decades with compassion and solidarity. This hospitality extended to the families of Taliban leaders, including the Haqqani family, who were welcomed as guests and allies during turbulent times.

However, the defense minister expressed deep concern over recent developments, pointing out that instead of reciprocating Pakistan’s generosity, Sirajuddin Haqqani and his family have allegedly offered sanctuary to elements considered enemies of Pakistan. Asif condemned this alliance with groups responsible for violence and bloodshed on Pakistani soil, describing it as a betrayal of the trust and goodwill extended by Pakistan over many years.

During a meeting in Kabul, Khawaja Asif personally urged Sirajuddin Haqqani to reconsider his stance and avoid siding with Pakistan’s adversaries. He stressed the importance of mutual respect and cooperation between the two neighboring countries, warning that Pakistan was prepared to provide financial assistance to the Taliban regime but required firm assurances that such support would not be exploited against Pakistan’s interests. The minister underscored the need for accountability and trust in any future dealings.

Moreover, Khawaja Asif paid tribute to the legacy of the elder Haqqani, whose name carries significant respect and reverence in the region. He called on the current generation to uphold the dignity and honor associated with the Haqqani name, urging them to maintain the sanctity of their heritage by fostering peace and stability rather than fueling conflict. This appeal reflects Pakistan’s desire for a peaceful and cooperative relationship with Afghanistan, based on mutual respect and shared history.

In conclusion, the defense minister’s remarks serve as a clear message to the Afghan Taliban leadership, emphasizing that Pakistan’s hospitality should not be taken for granted. The call for Haqqani to distance himself from hostile elements and to prevent Afghan territory from being used against Pakistan highlights ongoing concerns about cross-border militancy and security challenges. Pakistan continues to advocate for constructive engagement and peaceful coexistence with its neighbors, seeking to strengthen regional stability through dialogue and cooperation.
