Director Curry Barker has disclosed that multiple production companies approached him with offers to significantly alter the storyline of his acclaimed indie horror film Obsession. Despite promises of a substantially larger budget, Barker stood firm and declined these proposals.
The 26-year-old filmmaker and former YouTuber revealed that executives offered up to $2 million to revise the script, specifically to reshape the film’s main character, Bear, into a more heroic figure. Barker emphasized his refusal to compromise his original vision.
Released on May 15, Obsession was produced on a modest budget of approximately $750,000. It has since emerged as one of the most successful independent films of the year, boasting a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and grossing over $287 million globally.
The story centers on Bear, portrayed by Michael Johnston, a hopeless romantic who breaks the enigmatic “One Wish Willow” in an effort to win the affection of his crush, Nikki, played by Inde Navarrette. While his wish is granted, Bear soon faces dark and sinister repercussions for his actions.
During an interview, Barker was questioned about the film’s approach to themes of consent and whether there was pressure to clarify the story’s moral message. He explained that his intention was to present Bear as a flawed character rather than a conventional hero.
“I’m not rewriting the script to make Bear a guy who always does the right thing,” Barker stated. “It’s far more compelling that he repeatedly makes poor decisions instead of the correct ones.” He added that transforming the film into a more traditional narrative would have diminished its appeal.
“The movie would have lost its intrigue if Bear’s journey focused on uncovering the lore of the One Wish Willow,” Barker remarked. “I chose to reject additional funding to tell the story I was truly passionate about.”
