Sean Penn Clinches Third Oscar for Supporting Role but Misses Ceremony

Sean Penn has once again been honored with an Academy Award, adding a prestigious third Oscar to his illustrious acting career during the 98th Academy Awards ceremony held on Sunday night. Despite this significant achievement, the veteran actor was notably absent from the event and did not appear in person to receive the accolade. His award came for his compelling portrayal of the antagonist Col. Steven J. Lockjaw in the film One Battle After Another, a project directed by acclaimed filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson.

The ceremony took place at the iconic Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, a venue synonymous with Hollywood’s biggest night. However, Penn was reportedly out of the country at the time, which prevented him from attending the star-studded event. In his stead, actor Kieran Culkin, who himself won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar the previous year for A Real Pain, stepped forward to accept the award on Penn’s behalf. Culkin injected a touch of humor into the moment, quipping, “Sean Penn couldn’t be here this evening, or didn’t want to,” as he took the stage to present the honor.

This latest Oscar win marks a significant milestone in Sean Penn’s career, bringing his total Academy Awards to three. He previously earned Best Actor trophies for his powerful performances in Mystic River (2004) and Milk (2009), both of which were critically acclaimed and showcased his range as a leading man. Beyond these victories, Penn has also received several nominations over the years for roles in films such as Dead Man Walking, Sweet and Lowdown, and I Am Sam, underscoring his consistent presence in the awards circuit.

Earlier in the awards season, Penn had already been recognized with Best Supporting Actor honors at both the BAFTA Awards and the Screen Actors Guild Awards for his role in One Battle After Another. Similar to the Oscars, he was absent from these ceremonies as well, highlighting a pattern of missing the public celebrations despite his critical success. His absence has sparked curiosity among fans and industry insiders alike, though no official explanation has been provided.

At the 98th Academy Awards, Penn triumphed over a highly competitive group of nominees. His fellow contenders included his co-star from One Battle After Another, Benicio del Toro, as well as Stellan Skarsgård for Sentimental Value, Delroy Lindo for Sinners, and Jacob Elordi for Frankenstein. Notably, Penn had attended the Golden Globe Awards earlier in January but did not win in the Best Supporting Actor category there, losing out to Skarsgård. This Oscar victory therefore serves as a significant comeback and recognition of his outstanding work in the film.
