Italy’s Meloni Condemns US-Israeli Actions Against Iran Amid Rising Global Tensions

Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni delivered a forceful critique on Wednesday regarding the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. Speaking before the Italian Senate, Meloni condemned what she described as a dangerous escalation of military interventions that fall outside the boundaries of international law. Her remarks marked the strongest public rebuke from Rome toward the US-Israeli campaign against Iran since the conflict began, signaling a shift in Italy’s diplomatic tone amid mounting regional instability.

Meloni’s speech came in response to mounting pressure from opposition parties within Italy, who have accused her right-wing government of adopting a stance that is overly conciliatory toward Washington and Tel Aviv. Unlike many European countries that have largely refrained from openly criticizing the US and Israeli military actions—Spain being a notable exception—Italy’s Prime Minister chose to highlight the broader implications of these interventions. She emphasized that such unilateral military operations undermine established international norms and risk further destabilizing an already fragile global order.

While Meloni firmly condemned the military strikes, she also reiterated Italy’s position on Iran’s nuclear ambitions. She stressed that Tehran must be prevented from acquiring nuclear weapons, warning that such a development would shatter the global non-proliferation regime. Meloni, allowing Iran to develop a nuclear arsenal would have severe consequences for international security, exposing not only Italy but the entire European continent to unprecedented nuclear threats. This dual message underscored Italy’s nuanced approach: opposing aggressive military actions while remaining vigilant about Iran’s potential nuclear capabilities.

The conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran has now extended into its twelfth day, with air strikes exchanged across various parts of the Middle East. This ongoing confrontation has disrupted approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil and gas supplies, exacerbating global energy market volatility. Meloni drew a parallel between this Middle Eastern crisis and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, suggesting that both conflicts are symptoms of a deeper, systemic crisis in the international system. She warned that the proliferation of unilateral military interventions and escalating threats are contributing to a dangerous erosion of global stability.

In her address, Meloni also outlined Italy’s concrete steps to support regional security. She confirmed that Italy is supplying air-defense systems to Gulf countries targeted by Iranian strikes. This assistance is motivated not only by Italy’s strategic partnerships with these nations but also by the presence of tens of thousands of Italian citizens living in the region. Additionally, around 2,000 Italian troops are stationed in the Gulf, underscoring Rome’s vested interest in maintaining security and protecting its nationals amid the escalating conflict.

Meloni’s remarks reflect Italy’s delicate balancing act between maintaining strong transatlantic ties and asserting its own stance on international law and regional security. As tensions in the Middle East continue to rise, Italy is positioning itself as a voice calling for restraint and adherence to legal frameworks, while simultaneously preparing to defend its interests and citizens in a volatile environment. This development highlights the complexities European nations face as they navigate the intersecting challenges of diplomacy, security, and energy supply disruptions in a rapidly changing geopolitical landscape.
