Punjab Government Launches Dedicated Cyber Crime Unit to Combat Digital Offenses

The Punjab government has taken a significant step towards strengthening its fight against the growing menace of cyber crimes by announcing the formation of a dedicated Cyber Crime Investigation Department. This new unit is designed to address the surge in digital offenses such as online fraud, hacking, social media-related crimes, and cases of digital blackmailing that have increasingly affected citizens across the province.

This initiative, which has received formal approval from the Chief Minister of Punjab, reflects the provincial administration’s commitment to enhancing law enforcement capabilities in the digital realm. The establishment of this department aims to provide a more focused and specialized approach to investigating cyber crimes, which have become more sophisticated and widespread in recent years.

In line with this development, the government has appointed Additional Inspector General of Police (Logistics and Procurement) Punjab, Fawaduddin Qureshi, as the focal person responsible for overseeing the establishment and operationalization of the Cyber Crime Investigation Department. This appointment underscores the importance of experienced leadership in managing the complexities associated with cyber security and crime prevention.

Further reinforcing this effort, the Inspector General of Police Punjab, Abdul Karim, has directed the Deputy Inspector General of Police Headquarters Punjab to issue an official notification formalizing the creation of this specialized unit. This move ensures that the department will function with full legal backing and administrative support, enabling it to carry out its mandate effectively.

Moreover, the Cyber Crime Investigation Department will benefit from technical and investigative assistance provided by the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency. This collaboration is expected to enhance the department’s ability to tackle cyber offenses by leveraging advanced technology and expertise at the national level. Such cooperation is crucial in addressing crimes that often transcend provincial boundaries and require coordinated responses.

Overall, the formation of this new department marks a proactive approach by the Punjab government to safeguard its citizens from the increasing threats posed by cyber criminals. It is a timely response to the evolving digital landscape, where cyber security has become a critical concern for both individuals and institutions. The department’s work will not only focus on investigation but also on prevention, awareness, and capacity building to create a safer online environment throughout Punjab.
