British counter-terrorism authorities announced on Tuesday the arrest of two men as part of an investigation into a suspected terrorist plan aimed at the Jewish community in northern England. The suspects, both in their 30s, were detained in central Manchester on Sunday, with additional searches conducted in Salford and Liverpool.
Senior National Coordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing, Vicki Evans, described the operation as a long-term proactive investigation that successfully disrupted what is believed to have been a plot targeting the Jewish community in the Manchester area. She emphasized that detectives currently do not consider there to be any ongoing threat.
Meanwhile, police in Manchester have intensified security measures in anticipation of the upcoming Jewish High Holy days. This heightened vigilance follows last year’s tragic attack on a Manchester synagogue, where two Jewish worshippers were killed by a British citizen of Syrian origin who claimed allegiance to Islamic State.
Evans acknowledged the heightened concern this news might cause within the Jewish community and the wider public, especially during this significant religious period. She reassured that law enforcement agencies are collaborating closely with Greater Manchester Police and other partners to ensure the safety of both the community and the general public.
