Malala Yousafzai Urges Critical Thinking and Gender Inclusion in AI Era

Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai has emphasized the importance of adopting a thoughtful approach to artificial intelligence (AI), encouraging people to use it as a tool for learning while maintaining human critical thinking skills.

In a video shared by her father, Ziauddin Yousafzai, Malala explained that she personally uses AI to stimulate her thinking rather than to replace human reasoning. She described her method of engaging with AI by asking questions about fundamental concepts, potential counterarguments, and weaknesses in ideas.

“These are effective ways to truly engage your mind,” Malala noted, stressing that AI should inspire curiosity, questioning, and deeper analysis. However, she also expressed concern about the underrepresentation of women, girls, and marginalized communities in AI systems, cautioning that technology can perpetuate existing social inequalities.

“AI often excludes women and girls and overlooks the perspectives of underserved groups,” she said, advocating for more inclusive AI development practices. Malala highlighted that while AI offers access to vast information, users must learn to critically evaluate and analyze this content rather than accept it uncritically.

“We need to focus on how we consume and assess information—something that remains challenging for AI,” she added. She underscored the unique human capacity to question, analyze, and make decisions, which AI cannot replicate.

The education advocate also addressed the issue of information overload in today’s digital age, where people are constantly bombarded with content from screens, television, and other media. “For me, using our brains remains the most important thing,” she affirmed.

Malala encouraged users to pose critical questions to AI and carefully examine its responses to understand how information influences their perspectives and choices. She pointed out that access to information is no longer the primary obstacle in the AI era, as knowledge is widely available. Instead, the key challenge lies in developing critical thinking skills to differentiate between credible arguments and misleading information.

“Access to information is no longer the problem; what we need are critical thinking skills,” she stated. Calling on education systems to evolve alongside rapid technological advancements, Malala emphasized that AI must be designed to avoid reinforcing gender biases.

“Although AI is new to all of us, we must ensure its design does not perpetuate gender bias,” she concluded.
