Pakistan Urges Strengthening Iran-US Understandings Under Islamabad MoU

On Friday, Pakistan highlighted the importance of advancing the agreements established between Iran and the United States under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This stance was presented during a meeting between Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, held on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) meeting.

During their discussion, both ministers reaffirmed the historically strong and close relations between Pakistan and Iran while examining the shifting dynamics in the region. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that DPM Dar voiced serious concern over the recent escalation of tensions and stressed the critical need for dialogue, restraint, and de-escalation from all parties. He underscored the importance of sustained diplomatic efforts to secure lasting peace and stability, particularly emphasizing the need to build upon the understandings reached in the June 2026 Islamabad MoU.

FM Araghchi expressed gratitude for Pakistan’s ongoing diplomatic backing and its constructive role in fostering regional peace and security. He also acknowledged Pakistan’s efforts in facilitating the safe return of Iranian fishermen and crew members, including those from vessels seized by the US, highlighting Pakistan’s close coordination with Iranian, US, and other relevant authorities to ensure their secure passage through Pakistan and return to Iran.

The two sides agreed to maintain close coordination and hold regular consultations on matters of mutual interest. They reaffirmed their shared commitment to collaborating for regional peace, stability, and prosperity, the Foreign Office.

This meeting occurred amid renewed tensions in the Gulf region, where Iran and the United States face a fresh standoff over the Strait of Hormuz. This confrontation has raised doubts about the future of the interim arrangement established under the Islamabad MoU last month. Regional anxieties have also intensified due to threats to maritime security and energy supply routes.

Recently, Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi forces claimed responsibility for missile and drone attacks on two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea and threatened to blockade Saudi ports. These actions have sparked fears of broader disruptions to critical shipping lanes and global oil markets.

The talks between DPM Dar and FM Araghchi also coincided with Pakistan’s recent diplomatic initiatives aimed at enhancing regional security and maritime stability following the Houthi attacks. A day prior, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia agreed to maintain close coordination to support regional peace, security, and the uninterrupted flow of lawful maritime trade. This understanding was reached during a phone call between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, where the premier strongly condemned the attacks on Saudi oil tankers.
