Punjab to Launch Rs2,000 Monthly Fuel Subsidy for Motorcyclists

The Punjab government is preparing to introduce a significant subsidy program aimed at motorcyclists to alleviate fuel expenses. The plan proposes a subsidy of Rs100 per litre of petrol, providing monthly relief of Rs2,000 per rider.

To finance this initiative, the provincial administration has requested Rs24 billion from the finance department. A formal summary seeking approval for these funds has been submitted to Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. The release of funds will proceed once she grants her consent.

Officials anticipate that approximately 12.5 million motorcyclists across Punjab will benefit from the scheme. The excise department reports that over 8 million bikers have already completed registration, with the program expected to commence following the conclusion of this process.

Punjab has experienced a substantial increase in motorcycle ownership over the years, with nearly 50 million bikes registered since 1980. This growth underscores motorcycles’ role as a vital mode of transportation throughout the province.

In a significant development, the subsidy aims to ease the financial strain on daily commuters amid volatile fuel prices. However, specific details regarding the scheme’s implementation and eligibility requirements have yet to be officially disclosed.
