Pakistan Enforces 8pm Closure for Markets and Shopping Centres Nationwide

Pakistan has introduced comprehensive energy-saving measures, mandating that markets, shopping malls, and commercial centers close by 8pm across most regions of the country. This directive was issued following a high-level meeting led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday.

The new regulations apply to Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Islamabad Capital Territory, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Notably, in divisional headquarters within Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, these establishments will be permitted to operate until 9pm.

These measures, developed in coordination with provincial authorities, also specify earlier closing times for various businesses. Grocery stores, departmental outlets, and retail shops must close by 8pm, whereas bakeries, restaurants, tandoors, and other food vendors are allowed to remain open until 10pm.

Venues such as marriage halls and marquees will also be required to shut by 10pm, with wedding ceremonies at private residences prohibited beyond that hour. Medical stores and pharmacies are exempt from these restrictions and will continue normal operations.

The government announced that these timings will be implemented starting April 7. Meanwhile, discussions are ongoing with the Sindh government to introduce similar restrictions in that province.

In a related development, the federal government is providing free intra-city public transport for one month in Gilgit and Muzaffarabad, covering all associated costs. This initiative aims to support citizens amid the new energy conservation efforts.

Prime Minister Sharif expressed gratitude to the chief ministers of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan, and the administration of Azad Jammu and Kashmir for their consensus on the measures. He also expressed optimism that the Sindh government would soon finalize consultations and join the initiative.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema, and senior officials participated in the meeting where these decisions were finalized.
